Physical Modeling

  • Sound Chain - A physical model of eight masses connected one to another with elastic springs. In the gemwindow the masses are represented as circles moving in three dimensions, the springs between them as lines (x- and y-axis only). Each force sent to the first or last mass of the chain causes a motion of all others and can be heard as a special spectral sound. The density in which forces are sent is gradually varied when animation is active. Try different presets of spring properties. Parameters of masses and springs (weight, length, elasticity, damping) as well as the ones of the according sound modul (base frequency, range and offset of first partial select etc.) and the density of the given impulses can be editet in the abstractions "mschain" and "soundmod". Pmpd-library required.

  • Four to Five - Four masses are connected in all possible ways one to another and to a fixed origin by 10 springs. Because all the springs have same length and elasticity the structure has a restlessness from the beginning: turning on the animation you can see the structure move in a kind of slow pulsation. According to the motion a modal sound is generated. After forces have been randomly set to different amounts you can send these to a particular solid. Watch this impulses effect to the other solids and listen to the changing of sound. Pmpd-library required.
